Nicene Creed

We believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible.

What does it mean that the Son is “eternally begotten”?

If God had not a communicative, spreading goodness, he would never have created the world.  The Father, Son and Holy Ghost were happy in themselves and enjoyed one another before the world was.  But that God delights to communicate and spread his goodness, there had never been a creation nor a redemption.  God useth his creatures not for defect of power, that he can do nothing without them, but for the spreading of his goodness.”

The Triune God

 What was there in the beginning?

The Trinity – Tri-unity – Three Persons united in love.

Galatians 3:26-4:7

God the Son became God our Brother.

He came to make the perfect offering.

He brings us into His Sonship.

We are clothed in Christ,

Filled with the Spirit,

Doted on by the Father.

The trinity is not a maths problem!

It’s the good news that God is love...

... and we are invited!

Compare and contrast with the solitary, lonely god.

 

Think of it as 51 weeks early...

Trinity means:

There is a romance to God

...a spreading, outgoing love

.

There is room in God

...an invitation to dwell in that love.  But how?...

.

There is response in God

...the Son responds to the Father in our name
...by the Spirit, we dwell in Him, adopted into God

And here is Mike's sensational conclusion.

Delighted by God?  Heartfelt Christianity?

The focus isn't on our delight but on the God who is so delightful.  The focus isn't on our hearts but on the Christ who wins them.

And so, my brothers and sisters, look to Jesus who shows us the love of the Father and who shares with us the love of the Father.

Do not focus on any delight you do or do not have in Him.  That's not your focus.  Look to Him who brings delight.  Look to Jesus.  United to Him - He is your status.  Then your heart begins to thrill. 

When you're looking inside grubbing around for how delighted you are... well,  you'll just scrape yourself raw.  Look to Him in whom there is all fullness.  And be delighted.

Look to Jesus, else you'll forget that God is a Father.  Look to Jesus else you'll forget that God is your Loving Father who accepts you in the Son.

For the refreshing of the church today, let us be a people who speak much of Jesus.  Who lay open and unfold the unsearchable riches of Christ to ourselves everyday, to each other, for thereby hearts are drawn to Christ.

For, as Luther said,  it is through Jesus that "we may look into God's fatherly heart and see how boundlessly He loves us, that would warm our hearts, setting them aglow."

I love trinitarian theology.  I love affective theology.  But the centre is Christ.  In Him we see trinity, from Him comes heartfelt joy.  Therefore Look to Jesus!

I'm always coming across it.  Do you ever hear this kind of statement?

Well yes it's important to be Christ-centred, but let's not forget the Father or the Spirit.

And I say...

Wh...

H...

Y...

Honestly, I don't know what to say to that.  It's hard for me to imagine the kind of God or gospel in which that sentence makes sense.

Because where does such thinking leave the mediation of Christ ?  Do we really believe in Christ as Mediator?

Or do we think it's about balancing our respect for the Persons?  As though 'being trinitarian' means standing before a loose association of deities and ensuring equal devotion.  That sounds more like speed-dating at the Pantheon.  Do we really imagine ourselves to be outside the Three, making sure we spend equal time at the feet of Each?  Have we forgotten that we are in the Son?  And nowhere else!  Have we forgotten that the Father and the Spirit are in the Son?  And nowhere else!

Or is that only an incidental point?  Is that only half true?  Or only sometimes true?  Because if it's just true - true true - then there's no way to be Patro-centric or Pneuma-centric except by being resolutely Christo-centric.

I know the Father as 'Him Who makes the Son Son.'  I know the Spirit as 'Him Who makes the Christ, Christ.'  And I don't know them otherwise.

But a theologian making a plea for equal time for the Persons... once they turn their gaze from the Son, how exactly are they going to view the Father?  They're not.  So this one to whom they turn when they look away from Jesus, who is that guy?

And what's he doing?  Clearly He hasn't committed all things into His Son's hands.  He's got a venture or two on the side that requires supplemental enquiries!

And where do they imagine themselves to be as they circulate around the trinity?  Do they think of themselves as a fourth individual at the heart of the Holy Huddle.  Well the Shack might put me there and some Christian art might put me there, and that might be an improvement on unitarianism. But that's not really where I am.  I'm IN Jesus participating in His Sonship and Anointing.  This is my only access to the life of the trinity.  Jesus is not just One of the Three, He is The Way.

I don't have a relationship with the Father and the Spirit except the relationship that Christ has with them.  I know the trinity not from some objective fourth perspective, but only from Christ's perspective.  Only in Him, and all that He is and does for me, do I know His Father and Spirit.

So, absolutely, don't forget the Father or Spirit.  Get to know the Persons in all their distinct glory and grace. But they are not outside of the Christ, the Son of God. And neither are you.

Sermon on 1 John 4:7-21.

Let me give you a thought experiment.  Here are two scenarios.

Scenario 1: Imagine we’re on a ship.  But it springs a leak and starts sinking.  While we’re fleeing to the life-rafts, you manage to grab a bag before it all goes down.  Unbeknownst to the rest of us your bag contains a bottle of water and some canned meat – tuna and spam and things like that.  So there we are huddled together in the life-raft bobbing along the open sea.  Eventually spot an island in the distance.  We start paddling towards it and as we get closer we see that the island is incredibly bare. There doesn’t appear to be a stick of shrubbery, no sign of fresh water, it’s basically a big rock in the middle of the ocean.  But it’s our only hope.  So we row towards the island and as we get closer your brother turns to you and says “Boy I’m thirsty.”  What do you do?

Scenario 2: Same deal.  Our ship sinks.  We flee to the life-rafts.  Unbeknownst to everyone you have a bag containing water and canned meat.  As we bob along in the open sea we spot an island in the distance.  As we paddle towards it, we see that it’s lushous, luxurious, full of life.  You can see the trees heavy with choice fruits.  There’s a gushing waterfall in the distance.  It’s a tropical paradise.  As we row towards shore your brother turns to you and says “Boy I’m thirsty.”

What do you do?  Do you give your brother a drink of water?

Well in scenario 2 you’d be much more likely to give him your water wouldn’t you?  In fact in scenario 2 you might even throw the whole bag open and say, water and spam for everyone, let’s celebrate, wouldn’t you?  In scenario 2 you would treat your little bag of goods a lot differently wouldn’t you?

Why?  Are you a much nicer person in scenario 2?  Are you suddenly more moral?  Have you suddenly got a heightened sense of ethical duty?  Is your conscience stronger now?  What’s changed between scenario 1 and scenario 2?

Here’s what’s changed – your vision has changed.  You have seen an abundance of life and it’s liberated you to be generous.  That’s the only difference between these scenarios.  You’re still the same bundle of sins and selfishness you always were, but now you’ve seen, now you’re celebrating, now you’re assured that things are going to be ok.

You could take anyone in the whole human race and put them into those two scenarios and present them with exactly the same temptations.  And in scenario 1 we’d all be much more tempted to be grasping and greedy.  And in scenario 2 we’d all be much more likely to be selfless and generous.

And that’s got nothing to do with the quality of your moral fibre.  It’s got everything to do with what’s out there.  If your vision is captured by a new reality out there – then you’re freed to be generous.  Sinful, selfish, sulking little ball of contradictions that you are – you see, you celebrate, you’re assured that things are going to be ok, and suddenly you find yourself loving.

And the argument of 1 John, especially in chapters 3 and 4, is this:  Look!  Look!  There is an abundance of life, it’s going to be ok.  We are in tropical paradise territory people.  So bust open your little bag and share out the spam.  That’s the argument. ...continue reading "Beloved, let us love – Sermon on 1 John 4:7-21"

I'm all for trinity.  Trinity this and trinity that.  Clicking on my trinity tag is like typing Google into Google - you may just BREAK THE INTERNET.

But here's the thing - "The Trinity" does not reveal God.  Jesus reveals God (might I add, by the Spirit).  That's the trinity.  But "The Trinity" is not the image of the invisible God.  "The Trinity" is not the Mediator between some Distant-Power-God and today's agnostic enquirer.  Rublev's is not the Icon of the unseen LORD - Jesus is.

I see Christians captured by the wonder of trinity and I'm excited.  Without trinity there is no gospel.  There is no other God but Jesus with His Father and Spirit.  And we participate in that divine nature in Jesus.  These truths do need shouting from the rooftops!

But in people's excitement to placard the warmth of the intra-trinitarian life I see a danger.  The danger is that Jesus might not be the Way in to 'God is love'.  Instead natural theology provides the in: "we all know love is lovely, well wouldn't it be nice if God was love in just the way we all understand love...."

One problem with this (among others) is that preachers might not be sufficiently earthed in their speaking.  They will paint verbal Rublevs rather than simply opening Scripture and saying look at Jesus.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for affective talk and trumpeting the surprising loveliness of the Lord.  But let's just make sure it's the actual Jesus of Scripture who is revealing this to us.

Joining the life of the trinity is the very stuff of life.  But what that looks like is joining Christ.  It's a reality I experience in Jesus of Nazareth, not in some abstract mushy love vibe.

We will really be trinitarian when we are Jesus obsessed.
