Sherif is a friend of a friend, a Christian Egyptian newly married at All Souls, Langham Place this summer.  He visited his native Egypt with his English wife two and a half weeks ago.  They were detained at the airport, his wife was deported and he was taken by police and has not been seen since.

Please visit Release Sherif to learn more.

Please pray for his release.

Please write to the foreign secretary, your MP, the Egyptian embassy.

And please link / Facebook / re-tweet this (with hash tag #ReleaseSherif)

Bobby's the blogger who got me blogging.  Man of a thousand theoblogs - some of which he hasn't deleted ;-) and three of which are linked in my sidebar (a record).

He goes into surgery tomorrow to remove a cancerous tumor (more details here).  Please pray they get the whole tumor, that minimal (ie no) damage would be done in removing it and that it will never return!  The surgeons are called Dr Kevin Billingsley and Dr Greg Moneta.  His wife's called Angela please pray for her and the kids too at this time.

Go on, spend a minute now asking the Father to give this piece of bread to His precious children.

UPDATE:  Good news on Bobby's surgery

I really appreciate David speaking about the theology of the cross and how it teaches Christians not to simply flee to comfort but to fellowship with Christ in whatever suffering God brings.

David continues (sporadically) JollyBlogging.  Please keep him and Bobby in your prayers.

Then be thankful:

Here's a website where you can write to Christians imprisoned for their faith.  They will tell you the background to different prisoners, translate your encouragements into the approapriate language and tell you where to send your letter.

Remember those in prison as if you were their fellow-prisoners, and those who are ill-treated as if you yourselves were suffering.  (Heb 13:3)

Hi guys,

Please pray for my wife.  She's still in hospital and if she doesn't respond to treatment in the next 36 hours the surgical options are pretty nasty.  Pray for wisdom too - not sure how to respond to the 'drug her, drug her more, ok cut her' approach...

Thanks,

Glen

UPDATE 25/02/09:

Hi Everyone,
Thanks so much for your prayers.  Emma's slightly improved.  Enough anyway for the doctors to stop talking about immediate surgery.  So that's really good.  But she hasn't improved that much either.  And they don't seem to have a great handle on what's wrong or how they'll fix it.  So it looks like more hospital for the forseeable and maybe surgery too if things don't properly improve.

Thanks again for your prayers - we have both felt very upheld and very loved.  THANK YOU.

UPDATE 11/03/09:

Emma’s now out of hospital. The doctor’s don’t know what’s wrong but they’re now treating her as an outpatient for which we’re both very grateful.

From Baranabas Fund:

Hindu extremist violence against the Christian community in Orissa State, India, which started on 24 August (see previous articles : 12/09/2008, 01/09/2008), has continued almost unabated since then. At least 50 Christians have been murdered, some cut to pieces and others burnt alive. Many fear that the death toll is even higher, with one estimate suggesting that 120 Christians have been killed. About 18,000 people have been injured, many of them severely; numerous Christian women have been raped; some 4,400 homes have been destroyed; 300 villages have been cleansed of all Christians; and several orphanages and hundreds of churches and church buildings have been torched and razed. Relief camps, where Christians have fled for safety and shelter, have been attacked and drinking water has been poisoned.

Over 50,000 Christians are thought to be homeless, and around 30,000, more than half of them children, are hiding in the jungle, many without any food and water. Starvation is a very real danger for many of them, especially for the children, the elderly and the sick. Christians wanting to return to their homes have been told by the Hindu extremists: “Come back as Hindu or don’t come back at all.” Many who dare to return to their villages are forcibly converted to Hinduism. Sometimes the Hindu extremists pour petrol over the Christians and then ask them to convert; if they refuse they will be burnt.

UPDATE: The latest from Gospel for Asia

I got this by text on Thursday night:

"Please pray for Pastor Paul Thangaia (I think it's spelt Paul Thangiah - Pastor of Bangalore's largest church - 12 000 strong). RSS planned to kill him. They have already burnt 20 churches yesterday. They plan to destroy 200 churches in Orissa. BJP has also planned to kill him and 200 pastors in the next 24 hours."

Gospel for Asia suggest the following prayer points for the situation in general.

  • Ask God to specially assign His angels to watch over and protect His people, evangelists, pastors and church leaders in these areas
  • Pray that police and government officials will bring the violence under control immediately.
  • Pray that God will strengthen the church with courage, boldness, strong conviction and faith in the Lord to stand firm for His name during these days.
  • Pray that the enemies of the Gospel will be visited by the love of the living and true God and that a great number of them will turn to Him.
  • Pray for the suffering Christians to receive justice and favor in this hour of crisis.
  • KP Yohanan recorded this three days ago:
