Adjectives for God

Often when we use adjectives for God we reach for the big guns but find that they don't quite pack the punch we'd hoped.  We say 'Holy' and 'Glorious', 'Supreme' and 'Majestic' but the more we Capitalize the Words, The More People Just File Them Away In SPECIAL GOD-SPEAK files, never to consider them again.

I've been thinking - it's the little words, the more ordinary words that can slip under the radar and cause the most surprise.  Here are some I've been thinking of lately that have awoken in me genuine worship for a God who is always surprising.

Kind

Selfless

Happy

Fierce

Patient

Communicative

Vulnerable

Committed

Jealous

Friendly

Habitable

Hospitable

Funny. In the blog reader, I saw this post and associated it with another blogger - and if it were his I was not going to play. Now I see it's yours, and it looks fun. Chalk that up to your sincerity.

Dependable - in the sense of always being able to run to your father's bed in a storm as a child.

Meek - in the sense that if you don't pay close, close attention you could miss how terribly strong God is.

Terrifying - if you do pay attention.

Attentive - Many people note that 1000 years is like a day with God, but how many remember that 1 day is like a 1000 years? When He considers our trials of this day, He's given this day 1000 years of thought. His thoughts toward us are like the sand.

Cunning - In the sense that a fisherman waits until the right time, and uses the right bait to draw an invisible prey, God does not break into our lives but angles in.

Stunning - I think I'll actually blog on this one.

And there's a word somewhere between vindictive and just that I can't seem to find but that describes the way He'll remember every injustice done to every widow and orphan and repay every one of those tears. That God will hurt the enemies of His children gets forgotten these days, but I don't believe God ever forgets or ever whitewashes or ever condones evil.

If there's one thought that I believe could lead to revival in our time, it's a reminder that God punishes evil; directly, personally, and with extreme prejudice, God punishes evil. Jesus' extreme suffering of that very prejudiced punishment, roasting in the burning wrath of God, is utterly unknown.

Maybe my adjective might be "Furious."

You know I thought 'furious' in the middle of the night and then forgot it. Definitely. And maybe the word between vindictive and just is 'righteous'? - positively, jealously, committedly, furiously righteous.

  3. Lukas

can't say that these are small, howbeit, they do carry with them picturesque imagery outside what so frequently often is used...

    awe-striking
    remarkable

    inconceivable
    other... Amen!

  4. Lukas

*"Cant say that these are small"

I think I thought I was supposed to use little words that were more common and was deciding not to... So dismiss that statement, because it was never requested that we use little words. Additionally, those words aren't too terribly big and I feel awkward and embarassed that I prefaced with that comment. What a way to be humbled right off the start! Praise God.. (Sorry if this seems abstract, I really need to sleep!) God Bless.

  5. Matthew Adams

I'm an electronic music producer, with a Batchelor's degree in theological studies, and I've just finished an extremely heavy track called "ALMIGHTY 01" (Yes, it's always in all-caps...) and I've been looking for adjectives of God to use as song lyrics. But mine would be, based on my life experiences:

    Transcendent, Almighty, invincible, Strengthener.
Forceful, obliterating the evil one, destroyer.
Restorer, One who inspires, crusher of the devil's head,
this is the almighty, my father, the great I AM.

Just part of the lyrics. :)

    God bless!
