Yes I think it's a case of divorcing "authorial intent" from "Christian interpretation". The Trempers of this world are happy to be Christian (they just don't think Moses was).

When David said 'YHWH is my shepherd' what did he mean? I dont think we can say that he thought that Messiah was his shepherd. For David YHWH was associated with the deliverance of Israel from Egypt under the prophethood of Moses. This deliverance is nonetheless a prefiguring of Messiah's deliverance of the church of God. There are two ways looking at Psalm 23.
1.The immediate understanding that David had: YHWH who is the God who has delivered Israel and who daily delivers me
    2. The prophetic implication: YHWH is the Messiah Jesus of Nazareth who delivers his people from sin and death and who leads them into life.

In these two approaches we see the temporal and the eternal. The human and the divine.

    Hi Brian,

I think from at least Genesis 49 onwards the true understanding of the kings of Judah is that they were throne-warmers for the Universal King - Christ. Therefore as David accomplishes all he does, the Israelites are meant to think: "Here is the *first* Judah-ite king - what a picture of the Final and Ultimate Judah-ite King: the Messiah." In this way Psalm 23 is talking about "David's" journey through the valley of the shadow and *returning* again to the house of the LORD where "David" is uniquely celebrated. Coming between the Psalm of the cross (Psalm 22) and the Psalm of ascension (Psalm 24), it seems very natural indeed to see Psalm 23 as a Psalm about the true David's journey through the valley and *back* to His unique place with God. In other words it's a Psalm with the Ultimate David's words on the lips of the first David. This is certainly how Peter reads a similar Psalm (Ps 16) in Acts 2.

In other words, there are very good biblical, systematic (as well as historical) reasons to read Psalm 23 christologically. For an OT scholar to be removed for taking this stance is baffling to me. But obviously I don't know all the details.

Hi Brian, you said "For David YHWH was associated with the deliverance of Israel from Egypt under the prophethood of Moses." Who was this YHWH that David knew? Jude 5 gives the answer:

"Now I want to remind you, although you once fully knew it, that Jesus, who saved a people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who did not believe." (ESV)
